Voter Information on Proposition 5: County Invites Arguments For and Against

Voter information is being distributed in Uintah County on Proposition 5, a local sales tax option that will be included on the November election ballot. The Proposition asks voters to decide if Uintah County shall be authorized to impose a quarter of one percent sales tax which is the equivalent of 1 cent for every $4 dollars spent for the purpose of transportation services such as roads, traffic, pedestrian safety, public transit and non-motorized transportation. Uintah County is distributing Proposition 5 Voter Information pamphlets that invite arguments from the public For and Against Proposition 5. According to Uintah County Clerk/Auditor Mike Wilkins, responses so far in support of Proposition 5 cite support of funding Basin Transit Authority, county and city B and C roads, as well as restoration of the Wellness Wagon, originally known as the Radiation Vacation Van. Responses the county has received so far in opposition to Proposition 5 are against any raise in sales tax. Wilkins also commented that after the original Proposition failed to pass in Uintah County in 2015, it was learned that many voters were concerned that the money would support public transit and roads outside of the Uintah Basin. That is not the case, says Wilkins, who emphasized that 100 percent of the funding will support transportation in Uintah County. A public hearing on Proposition 5 will be held
on October 19th at 6:00pm
in the Uintah County Commission Chambers.
