Vernal PD is among the agencies sending a message to drivers about crosswalk laws. “Recently, throughout Utah, there have been multiple pedestrians struck by motor vehicles. These incidents are a serious reminder of why crosswalk laws exist—and why following them matters,” shares the Vernal PD message. Last week, Vernal PD officers spent 5 hours focused on crosswalk enforcement with the results being 40 traffic stops, 37 citations issued, and 22 warnings issued. Utah law states that when a pedestrian is in a striped crosswalk, drivers must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian is completely out of the crosswalk. That means the person must be fully across and no longer in the crosswalk before you proceed. Solid or unmarked crosswalks, which are usually at intersections, are still legal crosswalks. Drivers must yield to pedestrians. You may proceed once the pedestrian has crossed your direction of travel and is no longer in the lane you are driving in. Vernal PD encourages everyone—drivers and pedestrians—to familiarize themselves with pedestrian and crosswalk traffic laws. “Understanding the difference can prevent crashes and save lives. Let’s close out 2025 and begin 2026 with pedestrian safety in mind. Slow down, pay attention, and yield where required.”
