Vernal City Council is holding a special meeting tonight regarding a request to amend the City Municipal Code. During Wednesday’s City Council meeting, an appeal was formally presented by a man prevented from working as a taxicab driver due to a DUI received 8 years ago. The Vernal City Code says that 10 years need to have passed before someone with a DUI can qualify as a taxi driver. “The man made his case and we could see that he has had no other criminal issues,” says Mayor Sonja Norton. “We agreed to have the special meeting to look over the ordinance, go over more information and consider changing the ordinance. We agreed that 10 years may be a little stringent.” Information presented by City Manager Ken Bassett shows that Provo also requires 10 years but other Cities are at only 5 years, including Midvale, Salt Lake City, and Pleasant Grove. Tonight’s special meeting to consider the change will begin at 5:30pm at the Vernal City Office.
