Vernal City Anticipates Major Savings From Conversion Of Street Lighting To LED

Two years in the making, Vernal City Council is set to approve a contract with Rocky Mountain Power Wednesday evening that will save the City a significant amount into the future. The agreement is to switch the street lighting to LED lighting. Rocky Mountain Power is who actually owns the street light system and cities and counties pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the lighting infrastructure. Originally, Vernal City was paying a rate of $48 a month for each light. After doing a cost analysis, Rocky Mountain Power dropped that rate to $23 per light per month. The switch to LED lighting sees that amount slashed yet again landing it at $5 per light each month. This will save Vernal City right around $150,000 dollars a year, a savings that means the conversion costs will be paid off in just a year and a half. Vernal City has been eager to make the switch to LED lighting since Rocky Mountain Power approached the City about the option two years ago.
