Higher education is emphasized in high schools throughout the Basin and one lucky group of students recently enjoyed a college campus tour in Logan. Thirty Ute Tribe members who are high school students from Union and Uintah River high schools traveled to the Utah State University Logan campus for a two day introduction to the college experience. The students kicked off the experience by attending the USU vs. BYU football game and were even able to tailgate with USU President Noelle Cockett. The next day, the group visited the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, touring the barns and facilities while learning about careers in agriculture, science, natural resources, aviation, and teaching. Feedback from the students has been positive with a feeling that time spent on the Logan campus was eye opening and helped the students realize their potential. “I know I can be and do anything I want,” shares Uintah River student Ja’nik Murray, “and USU is a good place to explore different possibilities.” Talking Wolf Avila, a Union High School student, was impressed to see how many fields of study are available to students. “There are many opportunities to learn more about yourself and the areas of study you want to pursue,” shares Talking Wolf. USU-Uintah Basin associate director Cameron Cuch said the trip was a great opportunity for the local students to see what is available. The group’s trip also included a day at the USU rope course.
