Union High School Shares Electronics Policy For Upcoming School Year

A new Utah law prohibits cellphones and other electronics during school hours and Union High School has shared their policy moving into the new school year. The policy, shared on August 7th, applies to ‘personal electronic devices’ including cellphones, smartwatches, emerging technology, and listening devices. The policy is pretty straight forward. Personal electronic devices are to be “off and out of sight” and this applies from arrival to dismissal from school. No hallway use is allowed and no use in locker rooms or bathrooms. The policy also states there is to be no taking photos, audio, or video recordings. Disruptions may result in disciplinary action. A first offense states that the device will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. A second offense results in the device being confiscated and a parent can regain possession of it. A fine accompanies the 3rd or 4th offense and consequences escalate from there. The Union High announcement states that exceptions to the rules are an imminent threat to health and safety, a school-wide emergency, it being part of a health care plan/IEP/504, and a medical necessity.
