Uintah School District has been awarded a significant grant through legislation sponsored by Senator Kevin Van Tassell. In the 2016 legislative session, Senator Van Tassell sponsored SB 14 which amends provisions related to the state system of public education and the American Indians and Alaskan Natives. Among the amendments, a pilot program was created to fund stipend, recruitment and retention of teachers in American Indian and Alaskan Native concentrated schools. Uintah School District was among many schools in the state to apply and was 1 of only 2 schools to be awarded in the state. According to Superintendent Mark Dockins, the district will use the over $200,000 annually for recruitment and retention of teachers at Eagle View Elementary. “Eagle View is one of our most highly impacted schools as far as turnover,” explains Dockins. “We’ll utilize this funding to ensure that Eagle View stays fully staffed.” Funding has not yet been awarded but the Uintah School District will receive the grant for 5 consecutive years.
