A Uintah High School Senior has been selected as a candidate in an elite national program. Emily Despain has been named a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars program which selects around 4,500 students each year for their leadership, service, and scholarship accomplishments. Emily says she is excited for the opportunity and has begun the next stage of the application process to hopefully be among the final 161 students selected to travel to Washington D.C. for the National Recognition Program and White House sponsored ceremony. This isn’t the first award of this caliber for Emily. Last fall it was announced that Emily had been selected as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. She was one of more than 1.6 million Juniors from about 22,000 high schools across the United States that took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during her Junior year. The test is the initial screening for the National Merit Scholarship Program and less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the United States are selected to move on. Emily expects to hear soon whether or not she is a finalist in that program. Congratulations Emily Despain on representing the Basin so well.
