The 2022 Distinguished Alumna for Uintah High School is a woman known for many years of service to the community and especially to students. Vernie Heeney graduated from Uintah High School in 1969 and graduated from college with a double major in elementary education and psychology. She started her teaching career in Kansas but soon moved back to Vernal where she enjoyed a 30-year elementary education career in Uintah School District. She also returned to college to earn a Special Education Certificate and taught Special Education for 14 years. “We are honored to recognize Vernie for her many years of service to the students of the Uintah Basin and to the community at-large,” shares committee chairman and Uintah High Assistant Principal Scott Mansfield. “Vernie is truly a great example of hard work, dedication, and service and we are proud to recognize her accomplishments as a Uintah Ute.” Heeney will be honored during an assembly at Uintah High School on May 9th.
