Monday’s
meeting, Uintah County Commissioners expressed their support of Senator Orrin Hatch’s legislation aimed at common sense adjustments to the Clean Air Act. Commissioner McKee explained that Hatch’s bill aims to reinstate an action program that would give companies credit for efforts that improve air quality. “What this does is clean up the air and at the same time allow industry to move forward,” explains McKee. “We think it is a very proactive approach.” Commissioner Stringer also added his support saying that the bill introduces a scientific process to use as opposed to just a specific set of rules, which thwarts the efforts on both sides of the issue. “The problem with the Clean Air Act,” says Stringer, “is that it does not allow for latitude… This [bill] would allow action to be taken and to get credit for those actions. There are steps we can take to fix air [quality].” The Commissioners urge community members to contact Senator Hatch with their support, thanking him for introducing science to the process and for getting together both sides of the table.
