Uintah County and Cities Discuss PROP 1

After failing to get enough votes in the 2015 election,  Proposition 1 is being considered for an upcoming ballot in Uintah County. City officials and County Commissioners met on Monday and discussed the updated law regarding Prop 1. Naples City has already delivered their letter of intent to support having Prop 1 on the ballot while Vernal and Ballard City have yet to decide. Vernal City Manager Ken Bassett explained the changes made during legislation to the tax formula. In 2016, the bill was updated to allow less money be given directly to the transit districts and gave it back to the county and cities to decide where those funds are needed. While the group generally agreed the funding is needed, they also expressed the desire to see firm numbers before making a decision on whether or not to place it on an upcoming ballot in Uintah County. Commissioner Duane Shepherd asked that the funds possibly be used to get the Wellness Wagon back up and running for the Basin. Commissioner Stringer noted that had Uintah County residents understood that the funds could support the Wellness Wagon then it likely would have passed in 2015. Vernal City Mayor Sonja Norton said she would like good information distributed to the public on Prop 1 soon to keep everyone informed of what is being considered.
