The Uintah Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District has exceeded its initial target of gathering 175 horses in their first series of gathers. According to their press release, Uintah Animal Control, working with a licensed and insured horse gather company, has successfully removed 296 estray, abandoned and/or nuisance horses from public lands in Uintah County. Most of the horses were gathered from January 7th to January 11th in an area designated as a “public safety corridor” between Highway 40, State Road 45 and the Green River. District Executive Director Christina Williams says that most of the horses gathered are in good shape and only two horses were still being treated at the shelter for injuries; one for a bite injury from before the round up and the second for an injury from being kicked by another horse during the round up. As of last week, 18 horses remained at the shelter waiting for test results for equine infectious anemia but all owners of these horses had been identified. The remaining 278 horses were claimed and transported out of state. No horses from the gathers were euthanized. Williams says the district will continue to round up stragglers that were not caught.
