TriCounty Health: Unexpected Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Asthma

TriCounty Health Educator Daniel Jackson visited the KLCY studio this week to talk about asthma health and something unexpected that happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though contrary to what was expected, people with asthma who got COVID-19 did not prove to be at increased risk of severe illness or complications as compared to other people. While that was unexpected, it wasn’t the biggest shocker. Hospitals and emergency departments reported a sharp decline in the numbers of people they saw with asthma attacks with one study finding that total asthma attacks dropped by 40 percent. Jackson says that while researchers are still analyzing why this happened, some reasons could include an improvement in the use of asthma medication as prescribed, a reduction in exposure to cold and flu viruses due to mask use and social distancing, and lower exposure to irritants at work and school. TriCounty Health wants to help those in the community with asthma to learn how to keep lungs healthy. If you’re living with asthma and want to get to a better place, give Daniel a call at 435-247-1168 at TriCounty Health. They work with you and help you get the care you need.
