Unfortunately, 2026 looks like it will be a dangerous season for wildfires. Utah Forestry, Fire & State Lands is especially urging those who live in Utah’s High Risk Wildland-Urban Interface to take 3 steps before fire season is fully underway. First, ‘Create Defensible Space’ by clearing dead vegetation, dry grass, and debris within at least 30 feet of your home. Trim tree branches away from roofs and chimneys. Second, ‘Harden Your Home’ by cleaning gutters, removing leaves from roofs, screen vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh, and moving firewood or propane tanks at least 30 feet from structures. Finally, ‘Plan & Prepare’ by knowing your evacuation routes, signing up for local alerts, and assembling a go-bag with essentials for your family and pets. Preparation now can mean protection later.
