The Fourth of July is an exciting time of year for many but it can be a terrifying time of year for pets. The Rifle Police Department encourages all to take precautions during and after festivities. Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places, and crowds can all be frightening to pets, especially when combined. Leave your pets at home while you go to fireworks, parades or other celebrations. Never use fireworks around pets. It can result in severe burns to the face or paws of curious pets. Unused fireworks also pose a danger as the fireworks contain toxic substances. Finally, it’s crucial that you prepare for the chance that your pet will try to run away. Be sure they are in a secure area as the loud noises can startle the pets and cause them to run away. Make sure your pet’s ID is on their collar and that microchip information is up to date in the event your pet does escape.
