Steinaker Reservoir Losing Fish

by | Feb 12, 2019 | News | 0 comments

Despite the reservoir being drained, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has been striving to save as many fish in Steinaker Reservoir as possible and had been very hopeful even though the reservoir has been extremely low. On Monday, February 11, the DWR attempted to do a Bluegill salvage. What they discovered was that many of the fish were either dead or barely alive directly under the ice, a term known as fish kill or fish die-off. It looks like the loss of the fish is because of the low oxygen levels in the water. Also, as a matter of safety, those visiting Steinaker need to be aware that the DWR cut four foot by four foot holes in the ice. They hope to help fresh water to flow under the ice to aid in oxygenating the water. Be cautious around the holes.
