The second half of Season 10 at Vernal Theatre: Live kicks off tomorrow with the opening of ‘Steel Magnolias’. While most people know Steel Magnolias for the 1989 star studded film, the origin is actually as a stage play. Robert Harling wrote the play based on his family in Louisiana and his sister’s struggle and eventual passing due to Type 1 diabetes. It premiered off-Broadway in 1987 and ran for over 1,000 performances. The story, full of Southern charm and bickering but loyal best friends, continues to strike a chord with audiences and the actors portraying the story. Holly Allred plays Truvy in the local production opening tomorrow. “I auditioned for the show because I love a straight play and a small cast,” shares Holly. “The story shares hope and friendship and love and I love to share a story about that.” Kristin Meanea, who plays M’Lynn, says Steel Magnolias has always been one of her favorite movies. “Getting to be a part of it this way is a wonderful opportunity for me,” says Kristin. “It’s such a wonderful story of love and friendship and being there for those that need you.” Steel Magnolias at Vernal Theatre Live opens on Friday and runs January 16th through the 24th.
