The harsh winter has taken its toll on the James Bacon Memorial Park, home of the well known “Klondike” Boy Scouts winter camp. Every year, in the coldest part of February, hundreds of scouts head to the park for an intense and cold winter camp. When volunteers arrived at the park this year, however, “they arrived and found two of the four large pavilions had buckled under the weight of the heavy, saturated snow and had completely collapsed. Large picnic tables under them were also a total loss.” Structural engineer Cable Murray donated his time to assess the damage and perform safety checks on the remaining pavilions, one of which was declared unsafe and un-savable and the other that will need extensive renovation.
