Local officials make it a priority to advocate for public lands access and took a trip to our nation’s Capital last week to do just that. Uintah County officials met with United States Senator Mitt Romney in Washington, D.C. last Wednesday. On Friday, Senator Romney shared a photo on Facebook stating that he had met with Uintah County Commissioners “to discuss [Uintah County’s] plan to maintain and ensure motorized access to the public lands within their county and offer assistance in proving the status of the County’s roads.” Romney’s post acknowledges that this is a major concern for Utah’s rural counties. Access to public lands is considered a very important topic in Uintah County because the County is around 5,400 square miles and only 15 percent privately owned. Uintah County officials advocate for public lands access for many reasons, including: extraction, grazing, recreation both motorized and non-motorized, and hunting.
