Rocky Mountain Power has shared a message with local customers on measures being taken to prevent and reduce wildfires. “The safety of our customers and communities is our top priority,” shares the announcement. “We may use protective settings and de-energize power lines to prevent wildfires during periods of the greatest wildfire risk anywhere across our service area.” The Enhanced Safety Settings result in lines being de-energized automatically when debris, wildlife or strong winds contact lines, the goal being to reduce the chance of a fire ignition. With that shared, Rocky Mountain Power acknowledges that when these settings are in place, there is an increased potential for outages. Rocky Mountain Power also utilizes Emergency De-energization which means that when an active wildfire moves too close to lines or equipment, they may de-energize the power lines. Finally is the option to implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff depending on extreme weather and area conditions, including high winds, low humidity and critically dry fuels such as vegetation.
