The Duchesne County Commission approved a resolution this month aimed at streamlining requests to adjust taxes, penalties and interest under special circumstances. Resolution 17-01 grants authority to the Duchesne County Treasurer to handle requests for adjustment of interest and penalties associated with delinquent tax accounts but only in low cost situations. The Treasurer may abate any delinquent tax of $5.00 dollars or less that is delinquent on January 31st to prevent it from being posted on the delinquent roll for the new year. The Treasurer can also abate penalties and/or interest where the delinquent tax amount due is under $25 dollars, where the taxpayer was unable to pay taxes on time due to death or substantial illness or where the taxpayer did not receive the tax notice in time due to county error, among other circumstances. The meeting minutes note that these changes “will keep people from bombarding the Commissioners to waive their penalty and interest fees under special circumstances.”
