Charges have been filed in an incident of a repeat DUI offender in Uintah County. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, officers responded to a call of a suspected DUI driver who had been inside a local bank allegedly smelling of alcohol but then left in a vehicle. An officer noticed a vehicle matching the description turning west onto Highway 40 and confirmed the license plate after it had parked at a gas station. The officer approached the man sitting in the driver’s seat while the vehicle was still running and asked if he had been drinking that day. The man said he had not. The officer noted the odor of alcohol and performed standard field sobriety testing. Based on those results, the officer again asked about any alcohol consumption and the man admitted that he had consumed alcohol earlier that day as well as Adderall. The officer determined he was under the influence to a degree that rendered him unsafe to operate a vehicle and 50-year-old Clayton Jay Atwood was placed under arrest for DUI. Atwood has been previously convicted of DUI and is an alcohol restricted driver.
