Duchesne Fire Department is reminding the public to test your carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month to ensure they are operational. Most carbon monoxide detectors have a test button. If your CO detector has replaceable batteries, change them at least every six months. The entire unit should be replaced every 5 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer’s guidelines. Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “invisible killer” because it’s a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is undetectable to the human senses, so people may not know that they are being exposed. CO poisoning can occur when a fuel-burning appliance or machine, such as a furnace, heater or generator, is not working or vented properly. Install and maintain CO alarms in your home to provide early warning of CO. Make sure the vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, fireplace/wood stove and water heater are clear of snow or other debris.
