A program through the Utah Department of Transportation is preparing for construction of an approved shared-use trail along the Steinaker Service Canal corridor and on 500 North in Vernal. The project is through the Utah Trail Network and will construct a 1.9 mile paved trail from Highway 40 next to Aggie Blvd north along the canal corridor to 500 North and then along 500 North between Aggie Blvd and 1500 West. The project overview states that this route creates “a vital active transportation connection that improves access to several key destinations—including Central Cove Early Education Center, Uintah High School, Terra Academy, Uintah Basin Technical College, the USU Uintah Basin Campus, the Golden Age Senior Center, and multiple local churches. The trail is designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities.” A public open house for the project is scheduled for Monday, April 21st from 5 to 7pm at the USU Vernal Campus. It is anticipated that construction of the trail will begin in the fall.
