A huge search effort was launched on Friday after a call came in to authorities that a plane had crashed about 30 miles east of Meeker. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, a call was received from the Federal Aviation Administration at approximately 10:24am stating that a small Cirrus 4 seater aircraft had gone down but they did not have an exact location of the crash. A command center was set up and multiple agencies engaged in the search. The exact location of the crash was found from the air and, with the coordinates provided, search and rescue determined not to send ground teams. Instead, St. Mary’s Care Flight and Classic Air Med were contacted and able to land and extract the pilot and his wife from the crash. Neither were injured and they were transported to Meeker. The couple are from Colorado Spring, Colorado.
