The PL Gulch Fire in Colorado’s Rio Blanco County continues to burn as evacuations were in place and eventually paused over the weekend. The PL Gulch Fire was reported on July 13th about 20 miles Southwest of Meeker. It is now 1,580 acres and 45% contained. There are over 200 personnel assigned to the fire that is burning in grass, brush, and pinion/juniper mix. “Fuels are drought-stressed and very dry,” shared Sunday’s announcement. “Increased fire activity has been common when wind and terrain align. Concerns remain high if afternoon thunderstorms materialize, producing gusty outflow winds. The continued high humidity will continue to moderate fire behavior, giving firefighters a better chance to directly engage the fire’s edge.” A reminder was also given that a temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in effect in the airspace above the fire. Wildfires are always a no-fly zone for unauthorized aircraft, including drones.
