A new form of competitive fun is coming to Vernal. The addition of pickleball courts at Independence Park in Vernal was approved during the Uintah Recreation Special Service District Board meeting on Wednesday evening. Sunrise Engineering presented three concepts for where the courts could be located with options on each side of the sports complex. During the meeting it was determined that there would be 4 pickleball courts installed. “I believe these will be heavily used between citizens, tournaments, and lessons,” shared Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion, who noted that it would be nice to have the courts completed sometime this summer. The estimated cost per court is $35,000 dollars. Prior to the meeting, $90,000 dollars had been raised between contributions from Vernal City, Uintah County, Ashley Regional Medical Center, Uintah Basin Healthcare, the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, and the Healthy and Happy Lifestyle Committee. A motion was made on the Rec board to approve $50,000 dollars as a contribution from the Rec District and the motion passed unanimously.
