Panel Discusses Resurgence Of Nuclear Energy In Utah During Energy Summit

The Uintah Basin Energy Summit at the Uintah Conference Center has included multiple panels of energy stakeholders focused on various topics. Among the groups that spoke and presented on Wednesday was a panel of experts sharing about the ‘Resurgence of Nuclear Energy and Utah’s Approach’. Dr. Laura Nelson, Regional Engagement Lead with Idaho National Laboratory, led the discussion, focusing on advances in Nuclear Energy, the role of research, regulatory action, and educating the public. The panel discussed the challenge of public perception as the technology has advanced so reactors are now much smaller, can be safely transported to remote locations, and are easier to manufacture. Panel member Shannon Kang, whose work includes community engagement on the topic of Nuclear Energy, emphasized that public perception of Nuclear Energy is still mostly myth, informed by television shows like The Simpsons with its giant nuclear plant, green waste, and three eyed fish. Education campaigns are underway to share accurate information and update the public’s perception. The panel also discussed Utah’s efforts to be part of the future of Nuclear Energy and that Utah is in line to participate in the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus initiative. Based on the discussion, it was clear Nuclear Energy is expected to be a significant part of the nation’s energy future. Just this week, Utah’s own U.S. Senator John Curtis highlighted Utah’s growing leadership in Nuclear Energy during an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing in the nation’s capital. Curtis emphasized the need to establish a clear regulatory pathway for nuclear materials, for greater federal coordination with Utah officials, and regulations that can keep pace with emerging nuclear technologies.
