KNEU 1250A domestic violence incident in Uintah County over the weekend ended with one person seriously injured and one person dead. According to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a family fight on Saturday night at 10:40pm at the Canyon Villas Townhouses at 2425 West 500 North.
A previous President of the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College is moving up the leadership ranks of Utah State University. USU announced on Wednesday that David Woolstenhulme has been appointed as Vice President of Regional Campuses. Woolstenhulme was the President of UBATC from 2012 to 2014.
Many Basin residents were surprised and alarmed by the smokey haze and visible ash that fell after the Dollar Ridge Fire started and thankfully the skies look much clearer now than before. This doesn’t, however, mean that air quality isn’t still affected “The smoke is a lot less than it has been but we still have some wildfire smoke in the area and particulate matter levels are still higher than would be normal without wildfires,” shares USU-Uintah Basin Bingham Research Center Director Seth Lyman.
An offer made to those impacted by the Dollar Ridge Fire could really make a difference as clean up efforts are underway. According to Duchesne County Planning and Zoning Director Mike Hyde, the Duchesne County Commissioners have agreed to offer the county’s popular trailer removal program to property owners impacted by the Dollar Ridge Fire.
As of Sunday, the Dollar Ridge Fire is 65 percent contained and was last mapped at 56,734 acres with 808 fire personnel on the job. Most of the fire area received rain over the weekend and the rain, along with cloudy conditions, made for minimal fire activity.
Cougars are doing well in Utah and as a result, the Division of Wildlife Resources is recommending more hunting permits for this fall. Last season, 581 permits were issued in the state and in the upcoming season, 653 permits may be given out.
Positive news keeps coming as the Dollar Ridge Fire was hit with a wetting rain over the entire fire area on Thursday. According to Utah Fire Info, the rains and cooler temperatures have resulted in a visible reduction in smoke and fire behavior.

Heavy rain over Dinosaur National Monument was a welcome sight Wednesday night even if it did result in washed out roads due to flooding. According to Dinosaur National Monument, the storm dumped nearly an inch of rain in an hour at the Quarry Visitor Center causing flash flooding in areas.
There’s no way to measure all the ways cancer affects families during and after a diagnosis. A group of locals who want to support others affected by cancer have organized the “Let’s Talk”: Uintah Basin Cancer Support Group and all are invited to participate. Group organizer Cecilia Sullivan says this month there is a change of meeting place as the meeting will be held at Ashley Regional Medical Center.
SITLA, the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, has requested title to 440 acres of federal parcels in Uintah County, according to a BLM Vernal Field Office news release. The announcement explains that the transfer of the parcels are supported by the ‘Utah Enabling Act of July 16, 1894’ which “supports the state’s schools through the land grant managed by the state.”
