KNEU 1250It seems obvious to most but safe driving includes paying attention to the road and limiting distractions as much as possible. “We are urging people to stay attentive while driving by paying attention to other drivers and pedestrian traffic,” shares the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office. “Distracted driving is always a concern for law enforcement and with new gaming crazes for phones and other media devices that concern has grown, especially with younger drivers.”

The Vernal area Scout Breakfast will be held at the Colton Pavilion on Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30am.
Plans for a nuclear power plant on the Green River can move forward after a ruling on Thursday by the Utah Court of Appeals. HEAL Utah, an environmental agency opposed to the plans for a power plant, filed the appeal after a district court judge upheld the decision by the state engineer to allow a diversion of 53,600 acre feet of water from the Green River for the nuclear power plant.
Changes made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could affect local livestock owners come January 2017. Local administrators of the Utah State University 4-H Extension are helping to spread the word that changes to the Veterinary Feed Directive will have significant impacts on how producers obtain feeds containing certain animal medications.
Applications for Vernal’s Pioneer Day Parade are available to pick up at the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce office. The parade this year will be held on Saturday, July 23rd. Lineup for the parade is at 8:30am and the parade will run down Main Street at 10:00am.
It’s been nearly 5 years since local hero, Sgt. Daniel Gurr, was fatally shot while on patrol in Afghanistan and the community is invited to remember his sacrifice as well as all fallen soldiers at a 5K event on Friday, August 5th, the 5 -year anniversary of Gurr’s death. The event will be a nighttime 5K followed by a candlelight vigil at the Vernal Cemetery, which Daniel’s mother Tracy Bede(Bee-Dee) says will be especially meaningful because most of Sgt. Gurr’s battalion is planning to travel to Vernal to attend.
Utah’s Honor Flight program is preparing to send a new group of veterans to Washington D.C. this fall and Uintah Basin World War II, Vietnam and Korean War veterans are encouraged to participate. Local Honor Flight advocate and representative Jeff Berry presented to the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce this week about his amazing experience taking his 90-year-old father on a flight just weeks before he passed away. The Honor Flight program’s goal is to take all WWII, Korean War and Vietnam veterans on a free, well organized and high class trip to tour Washington D.C.
Altamont Longhorn Days are in full swing with a list of activities about a mile long. Thursday’sactivities include the annual co-ed volleyball tournament that attracts a great response from local enthusiasts of the sport as well as the FFA Scholarship Jackpot tonight at the Altamont Rodeo Grounds.
A new support group is hoping to help locals affected by cancer through conversation and friendship. The newly formed “Let’s Talk” support group is being organized for the educational and emotional support of patients, survivors, caregivers and family affected by cancer. The group’s first meeting will be held on August 11th at 6:00pm at The Villa in Roosevelt.
National Park Service Rangers and an investigator from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of a hiker on the northern boundary of Dinosaur National Monument on Tuesday. According to Chief of Visitor Services Dan Johnson, monument staff received word Tuesdaymorning that a 73-year-old woman had fallen sometime during the night off a 120 foot cliff.
It’s been a successful season for the Vernal City Excitement Association. Nearly every Thursday this summer, the park at the Uintah County Library has been hopping with people and fun. So far this season there has been entertainment from local musicians, magic shows, bounce houses, face painting, and local food vendors. Each week the event finishes with a movie under the stars.Thursday will be the final Vernal Excitement event of the season and will feature music by Evan Sharp and the entertainment of the Polynesian dancers.
In the wake of national tragedies targeting police officers in recent days and weeks, locals are adding prayer to the list of ways to support local law enforcement officers. A community wide prayer gathering has been organized to petition God’s help in protecting law enforcement officers.
