After a long search, the Vernal City Council has approved the hiring of a new City Manager. Quinn Bennion is a native of Vernal that graduated from Uintah High School before going on to school at the University of Kansas.

Vernal City Gives Focus to FY2018 Budget

Departments and committees have been hard at work as the Fiscal Year 2018 budget adoption approaches for local governments. Vernal City has held multiple budget workshops and hearings in recent weeks as they whittle down the budget to match revenues. City Manager Ken Bassett communicated clearly that most revenue for the city is from sales tax which is down significantly making it necessary to tighten belts and not have any major capital expenditures.

Stonegate Sewer Project Moving Forward

The moving parts of the Stonegate sewer project have finally aligned and plans for construction are moving forward. The project is funded through the Community Impact Board and Department of Environmental Quality in the form of $4 million dollars in grant funding and $1.6 million dollars in a zero percent interest loan.

Federal Officials Conducting Sex Offender Compliance Checks

United States Marshals have been involved with Sweetwater County detectives in conducting a wide sweep of registered sex offenders over the last week to ensure of compliance. As a result, a felony arrest warrant has been issued for 58-year-old Bruce Leon Harms for failure to register, which is something Harms was convicted of as recently as 2013.

Weekend Events Fill Hotels and Restaurants

It was a busy weekend in the Vernal area with hotels sold out, restaurants packed and visitors enjoying a variety of events. The 7th Annual Basin Bash baseball tournament was a major contributor to the boost bringing in 45 teams from Wyoming, Colorado and the Wasatch Front.

Craig Man Sentenced to 9 Years for Meth

Possession of methamphetamines is taken seriously and one Craig man received a heavy sentence as a result last week. 47-year-old Duane E. Newton entered a guilty plea to possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced in Routt County Court to 9 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
