An officer-involved critical incident is under investigation in Vernal. According to a press release from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, probation requested assistance on Thursday, March 19th, at about 11:10pm. “Vernal police officers and Uintah County sheriff’s deputies responded to assist,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “They encountered the probationer, who had his hands concealed around his waist. An officer believed the individual had a weapon. When the individual advanced on the officer, a K9 was deployed and engaged the suspect. Shots were fired by at least one officer. The probationer was taken into custody and transported to the hospital to be evaluated.” Main Street from 500 West to 700 West in Vernal was closed with all traffic detouring around the area. The closure was put in place to preserve the integrity of the crime scene. Initially, it was planned for the Wasatch Back Major Crimes Task Force to come investigate the incident because both Vernal Police and Uintah County Sheriff’s deputies were involved. The Sheriff’s Office announced Friday morning, however, that instead detectives from Utah County were en route to Vernal to conduct the investigation. Main Street from 500 West to 700 West is expected to remain closed until at least midday Friday. Davis Jubilee, Beachin’ Soda Shack, the Ashley Valley Water Sewer District, and front parking lot of Basin Sports will all remain closed until investigators release the crime scene. There is no ongoing threat to the public from this incident.
