New Regulations to Prevent the Spread of Quagga Mussels

Boating season may seem far off but the Division of Wildlife Resources is spreading the word now: there are new regulations to prevent the spread of quagga mussels in Utah. Local boaters travel to and from the Basin hitting the variety of amazing waters in the state. If you visit Lake Powell or Deer Creek Reservoir, it is required that drain plugs be removed before leaving the reservoir and cannot be replaced until home. The Division of Wildlife Resources is urging boaters to take the new regulations seriously or risk being charged with a Class A Misdemeanor with fines of nearly $2000 dollars and restitution to the DWR to decontaminate and quarantine your boat. The changes are part of recent approvals made by the Utah Wildlife Board to decrease the chance of spreading quagga mussels to other water sources. Every summer, checkpoints have been set up in the Basin to prevent the spread of quagga mussels. For more information, visit
