Native American art sculptures that were originally reported as taken from the Craig KOA campground earlier this month were actually taken to the Moffat County landfill. The Craig Daily Press reports that the life-sized copper sculptures were made by a local artist and were property of the State of Colorado Public Arts Registry. One sculpture is of a “Fan Dancer”and the other is a young female with braids. The artist has since passed away but his wife noticed the sculptures were gone and when she asked, the new owners of the KOA told her the sculptures had been taken. After a search was underway the couple told police that they had actually placed the statues in a dumpster and they assume they had been taken to the landfill and likely destroyed. They had originally told her they were taken “in an attempt to spare her feelings.” Police reported that the investigation is now closed and no crime was committed.
