A Uintah School District teacher has been named the Science Teacher of the Year by the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Kristy Coon is a 5th grade teacher at Naples Elementary who is known for her hands-on approach to teaching science to her students. “The RMS-AAPG Science Teacher of the Year Award recognizes teaching excellence in geology and earth science,” shares the announcement. “Kristy uses the rich geology around Vernal to excite her students about geologic history and processes. Her classroom is a model in which other teachers from around the region come to observe her teaching strategies and student interactions.” Ms. Coon will receive her award during the 2022 RMS-AAPG Conference in July. Her approach to teaching science has also been recognized by the Utah Geological Association that named her their organization’s 2022 Teacher of the Year as well.
