The Division of Wildlife Resources office in Vernal has received several reports of black bears breaking into campsites and vandalizing trailers, tents, and trash areas. DWR Northeastern Region Conservation Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby is reminding all citizens that if a bear breaks into your camp, officials need to be notified the very first time it happens. “This may save the bear’s life,” shares Kieffer-Selby. “The DWR has official steps that are required to follow for bears that become unafraid of human contact.
If you can notify us the first time one gets into camp, then we can probably trap it and relocate it somewhere where it won’t become a continual problem. If you wait, you encourage that bear to keep coming back, and that isn’t good for that bear.” Contact the DWR Vernal office at 435-781-9453 or call Central Dispatch after hours at 435-781-4222.
