Fire crews from Dinosaur National Monument and the BLM responded to four lightning caused fires on Friday after a storm moved across the area on Thursday evening. According to Dinosaur National Monument, the largest fire is the Split Fire, located in a remote and rocky area at 7000 feet elevation on the north side of Split Mountain. On Friday, the Split Fire was creeping and smoldering on a half acre of patchy grass, brush, and pine needle duff. Three other single tree fires were also ignited during Thursday’s storm along the Yampa Bench Road in Colorado and fire crews were able to contain all three. As of Sunday, the Split Fire had grown to around 3 to 4 acres burning in very rocky terrain.” Because of its location and limited threat to people or structures, the Split Fire remains in monitored status with no active suppression efforts at this time,” shared Dinosaur National Monument. “Since the fire is burning at 7000 feet on the northside of Split Mountain near Rainbow Park, smoke may be visible for quite a distance.”
