Mountain Home Welcoming Mountain Goat Crowd

Excitement is growing to get a peek at Utah’s mountain yetis and enthusiasts of the event come from beyond the Uintah Basin. The Division of Wildlife Resources holds the mountain goat viewing event in northeastern Utah each year and the free event does not disappoint. In fact, the Uinta Mountains are the largest  block of mountain goat habitat in Utah and the DWR reports that the goat herds on the Uintas are doing very well this year. Mountain goats were re-introduced to the Uinta Mountains in 1987 when DWR biologists released a small group from Lone Peak. About 50 more were released over the next two years and then between 1992 and the year 2000, the herd was supplemented by 57 additional mountain goats. In total, 89 goats have been released on sites in the Uinta Mountains, a number that has seriously grown. “During our last trend count in 2014,” shares biologist Randall Thacker, “we counted 835 mountain goats. That shows how well goats on the Uinta Mountains are doing.” The event runs from 9:30am to 1:30pm on Saturday, April 15th. Simply drive up the Rock Creek Road until you pass the U.S. Forest Service boundary sign and look for biologists.
