Six months ago the call was sounded: get prepared for spring flooding! Emergency management leaders throughout the Basin distributed information and local stores stocked sandbags and other resources to help citizens get prepared to protect their property. Spring came and sporadic weather kept the mountain snow from all melting at once. “We appreciate the community taking the steps to mitigate and defend against flooding,” says Uintah County Emergency Manager Tal Ehlers. “This year had the potential to be horrendous if it all warmed up at once but we got lucky with Mother Nature. We did the right thing being prepared as a community.” Last week, National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the Duchesne River near Randlett but it was cancelled when the river crested and then began to decrease. The Green River is still running high, explains Ehlers, but that is because of the releases from Flaming Gorge. The other rivers in the Basin are running out of steam, says Ehlers, and appear to be slowing down.
