Monument Road to Remain Closed

The Island Park and Rainbow Park roads within Dinosaur National Monument will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time. Engineers from the Federal Highway Administration assessed the extent of the damage on the roads caused by flooding this winter and found that no immediate fix could allow for the reopening of the road. The Rainbow Park Campground and Boat Ramp will continue to be unaccessible. The engineers’ assessment revealed that areas of the flooding have the road eroded completely down to one, still-eroding, lane. National Park Service funding will be used to work on the road so that it can be reopened, hopefully soon, but because of the damage it could take some time. The Federal Highway Administration has committed to helping develop a plan for the project. A temporary bridge is currently being explored but nothing has been determined for sure.
