An Ogden man had a harrowing experience in the Uinta Mountains on July 20th but thankfully survived to tell the tale. Jake Schmitt was enjoying time on the mountain with his dog Buddy when the side-by-side they were traveling in lost control and rolled off a cliff. When he came to, Jake’s dog was by his side and he knew it was pointless to try to find his phone. With it being night and with just the light on Buddy’s collar, Jake managed to splint his broken leg and crawled several miles down the mountain over the next 11 hours. He reached his truck and managed to drive himself to a diner where staff called 9-1-1. Jake was rushed to the hospital in Park City and he has been recovering from the accident that broke his leg, fractured both ankles, broke multiple ribs, and covered him with bruises. Being reunited with Buddy was a special experience after the pair went through such a difficult ordeal together. Friends have set up a GoFundMe titled ‘Help Jake Recover After Uinta Mountain Accident’ to support his recovery.
