Local Teachers Providing “Beyond the Average Classroom Experience”

Many local teachers are known for their commitment in the classroom and attention to students. Principal of Uintah Middle School Christy Nerdin says Bethany Hansen and Jason Pierce are two such teachers that “go beyond the average classroom experience.” Bethany Hansen teaches 8th grade language arts and has implemented a letter exchange between her students and youth in Italy. Last summer, Hansen spent two months in Pesaro, Italy as a nanny. While there she met a woman who teaches English and the two agreed to set up a letter exchange between their students through email. The program has been a success this year and Miss Hansen plans to continue the program next school year. Jason Pierce teaches 7th grade science and brings experts into his classroom through his ‘Skype with a Scientist’ initiative. “Students are led on virtual tours and explore the STEM fields with scientists who share their passion and knowledge with our middle school students,” explains Principal Nerdin. Pierce’s students have visited with scientists from all over the country who practice in the fields of microbiology, paleontology, genetics, and medical research. Thank you to Miss Hansen and Mr. Pierce and the many Basin teachers like them who truly care for local students.
