Local teachers took advantage of an opportunity to learn more about the legislative process and attended Educator Day on the Hill on Friday. Teachers Rachelle Durrant, Kristen Oaks, Brian Baldwin, and Daniel McKenna represented Uintah School District. The event is hosted by the Utah Education Association every year. “We go out the night before for training on the legislative process, important education bills, and how to talk to our legislators if given the chance,” explains Durrant, an English teacher at Uintah High School. On Friday, the group of educators are given a tour of the Capitol. In addition to observing both the House and Senate in action, the Uintah teachers sat in on a committee meeting and met with Representative Chew for a few minutes as well as with Senator Van Tassell’s intern. “I learned so much about how the whole legislative process works and how to talk face to face with your representatives,” shares Durrant. “We were able to just share our stories as educators in hopes our representatives will make good choices for education and hopefully give us the funding we really need to provide effective education for all students in the state. It was a really neat experience.”
