An inspiring local man is in the state spotlight as this month’s Vocational Rehabilitation success story. The Utah State Office of Rehabilitation(USOR) chose to highlight Sidney Smith of Vernal, and it is easy to see why. In 2015, Sidney became a double amputee after battling severe nerve damage in his legs. “A lot of fear came over him when he was told his feet needed to be amputated below the knee,” shares the USOR highlight. “Not only was he worried about how his new disability would affect his job as a hotel manager, but he was also concerned about the financial burden of medical expenses.” Thankfully, Sidney heard about what Vocational Rehabilitation has to offer and after his surgery he received help in physical therapy and getting fitted for prosthetic legs. Sidney’s transition to life with prosthetics has undoubtedly had ups and downs but hasn’t slowed this man down. He has continued his work as a hotel manager. In addition to enjoying his young family, Sidney runs, hikes, competes in triathlons, and is currently training for an Ironman.
