Among the many items on the radar of local government is state bee regulations and the needs of local beekeepers to protect their interests. The Duchesne County Commission discussed issues facing local beekeepers during their Monday Commission meeting but the topic has been ongoing since last year. “Concerns were brought to us last year by local beekeepers,” shares Commissioner Ron Winterton. “An influx of bees are being brought here for the summer time from out of state, particularly out of California, and become competition for local bees without following state ordinance. They can also bring infection and other issues.” Winterton says that it’s often the case that the out of staters drop their hives off in remote areas of Duchesne County without even getting permission from the land owners. No official action has been taken by the Duchesne County Commission but they intend to continue the discussion until an appropriate practice is in place to protect local beekeepers interests.
