September is National Preparedness Month and Uintah County Emergency Management is encouraging citizens to check their insurance coverage. The big storm on August 22nd caused some flash flooding in Uintah County that affected a few property owners. “What some people don’t realize is that private property owners have the responsibility to mitigate against flooding,” shares Emergency Manager Tal Ehlers. “Doing simple things like landscaping or grading a slope away from the home, can make a difference in preventing flooding.” Ehlers says it is smart to double check insurance coverage to learn what is covered, what is not, and if you have adequate coverage for the possibilities. It’s also recommended to keep sand bags on hand, especially if you know you are at risk. The sandbags kept on hand by the county are saved for emergencies and property conservation are a lower priority than life safety and incident stabilization.
