Utah legislature’s 2017 interim committees have wrapped up their meetings for the year, shares Senator Kevin Van Tassell, and many items were explored. One of the topics of local importance is consideration of fireworks restrictions. In a summary of the November interim meetings, it’s explained that every July the legislature receives emails and calls from constituents about firework laws with complaints ranging from the impact they have on veterans to the affect they have on pets. This year, several legislators will propose legislation to cut down firework days surrounding the 4th and

from 14 days to 8 days when fireworks can be ignited. The bill will also give local governments more liberty to ban fireworks from hazardous areas. Local officials have urged the state for more local control over fireworks and the ability to issue restrictions. Under proposed legislation, cities would be given more flexibility in regulating firework use in their jurisdictions.
