The Utah Legislative Management Committee has voted for the State Legislature to support a lawsuit aimed at the ongoing redistricting debate. The lawsuit was filed by Rep. Celeste Maloy and Rep. Burgess Owens, as well as other political leaders in Utah, and aims to block Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson from approving the new congressional map selected by State Court Judge Dianna Gibson. The Committee vote was 8-8 with the House Speaker and Senate President casting a tiebreaker vote in favor to see it pass. House Speaker Mike Schultz told FOX 13 News, “I think it’s important on behalf of the legislature for us to file an amicus brief with the federal courts, just to state the legislature’s position on this important issue facing our state.” This is just the latest in Utah’s redistricting battle that involves multiple lawsuits and spans the years since Proposition 4 passed in 2018.
