Layne Dee Bennion, 64, of Aquasco MD passed away peacefully on May 15,
2025, surrounded by loving family. His death was due to Head and Neck
cancer.
Layne was born Dec 12, 1960 in Coalinga CA to Barton Bennion and the
late Lois Ann Sadler Bennion. He was raised in Vernal UT and attended
the local schools, graduating as Valedictorian in 1979. He briefly
attended Snow College, then chose to serve as a missionary for the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Sendai, Japan
mission. He returned home and attended Utah State University in Logan
UT, where he earned a Bachelors in Psychology and a Master’s in Human
Development then to University of Virginia where he earned a PhD in
Clinical Psychology in 1995. In 1985, he married Rebecca Eve Groesbeck
and they had a wonderful son, Mathew in 1986.
After graduating, he joined the US Air Force as a Clinical
Psychologist and served at Lackland AFB (TX), Onizuka Air Station
(CA), Keesler AFB (MS), RAF Lakenheath (UK) and at Joint Base Andrews
(MD). After retiring from the USAF, he worked at the Uniformed Service
University as training faculty and briefly returned to clinical work
at JB Andrews MD. He enjoyed working with this elite and highly select
group as well as the associated faculty mentors and peers.
Layne was known for his quiet love of family as well as love of
reading, continuous learning, service to students and mentees and work
with service members coping with mental health issues.
Layne is survived by his dedicated and supportive, loving wife,
Rebecca, and loving son, Matthew as well as his father (Barton),
stepmother (Marlene), five brothers (Corbin, Martell, Shawn, Quinn,
Kyle) and sister (Deah) and bonus sister Kym Rossi. His mother (Lois)
and sister (Beckie) have already passed on.
A graveside marker will be placed in the family section of the
cemetery in Dry Fork, UT.
Celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025,
at 1pm at 12232 South 3200 West, Riverton, UT.
