Jensen Fire Department Provides Christmas Safety Reminder

The Jensen Fire Department’s gift to the community this year is some very important safety reminders. First, is a message on gift giving safety of products containing a lithium-ion battery. “Lithium-ion batteries are in more than you probably expect,” shares Jensen Fire. “Be sure to read the labels! Follow the safety guides. They are there for a reason.” Lithium-ion batteries are found in many toothbrushes, laptops, power tools, electric wheelchairs, scooters, and other devices. While lithium-ion batteries are powering our lives more and more, it is important to know there are serious risks. Lithium-ion battery fire incidents are rising at an alarming rate and yet 44 percent of people admit to knowing nothing about lithium-ion batteries. If a fire starts in your home by a lithium-ion battery, you must evacuate immediately due to toxic gases. So what should you do? Purchase devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Only use the battery and charging cord designed for the device and remove the charger once fully charged. Charge in a flat, dry area, keep batteries at room temperature, and store them away from anything that can catch fire. Jensen Fire Department refers all to www.NFPA.org/lithiumionsafety to learn more.
